On the occasion of the competition organized by the Scheletri.com website, 300 words for a nightmare , to which a short story of 300 words maximum can be sent, I had the idea of writing this article to give some suggestions on writing a story of this brevity . Already in August I had written my short story, but it was certainly not the first I had produced of 300 words. I've been enjoying writing 300 word short stories for almost a year now. Precise. Or almost, given that the words joined by the apostrophe are counted as a single word, a count which in all those stories of mine gives the exact number 300. How to write a 300 word story ? Undoubtedly we need to summarize as much as possible, but this does not mean that we cannot say everything in just a few paragraphs.
The idea of history as a sudden flash It all starts from here, as in every story or novel. There isn't much to say about the idea, each one can be valid, the secret then lies in the development of the plot. In the story I sent to the competition the idea was to write a ghost story, but I didn't yet have the plot in mind. I wanted to Special Data talk about an abandoned house and a character who entered it. What happened next was pitch black... which, in a ghost story, certainly doesn't hurt. The plot built step by step In my opinion, in such a short story you can't waste too much time studying the plot like in a normal story. Often, in these stories of mine, the plot comes from writing, like the appetite that comes with eating. And so my character just walked into that old house and I stood behind him observing and taking notes.
Then he got dark, because I didn't know how the story would end, but in the meantime, describing his steps, I was halfway through the story. The end to be written before the end The end, in a 300 word story, is more important to me than the rest. Such brevity cannot end without a sensation. A flash story must have a striking ending that leaves its mark. That causes an emotion. This doesn't mean that my endings are Nobel Prize-winning, but I try to write them in a way that evokes a reaction in the reader. Whether he succeeds or not, we'll see... Therefore the end written before the end of the story. Why? Because I have to meet the 300 word limit. And I can't sacrifice the ending, I can't cut where cutting would ruin my purpose.
